Amongst the names that have been in the mailbox industry and metals industry, Step2 Company LLC comes out of left field with its background in children’s products “that build imaginations and enrich the family’s celebration of childhood”. Regardless, theStep2 531700 MailMaster StoreMore Locking Mailbox is a very popular locking mailbox sold on Amazon. Here’s a review:

Step2 531700 MailMaster StoreMore Locking Mailbox Product Description
As a departure from the heavy duty metal locking mailboxes, we review the Step2 531700 MailMaster StoreMore. As we were researching the top selling locking mailboxes we were surprised to find this one from Step2 Company LLC in the mix. Nevertheless,it has some good features too it that should give you pause that this might be the residential locking mailbox that you’re looking for.
This Step2 MailMaster Storemore Mailbox features a removable floor which changes your regular mailbox into a deep storage mailbox for approximately two weeks of mail. The storage compartment does lock (includes two keys) and features two doors so you can access mail from both front and rear. Mounting hardware and address numbers included and mountable on a 4×4 post which is not included.
Though not metal, Step2 claims the MailMaster StoreMore is built with heavy-duty poly construction which can weather the natural (and human) elements. Considering Step2′s background in child toys this is most likely similar material to what you’d see with the ruggedized durable children’s slides and swingsets – surprisingly durable builds.
Step2 531700 MailMaster StoreMore PROS AND CONS
- Large storage for two weeks of mail
- Constructed well, removable floor helps prevent fishing
- Assembly and installation are very straight-forward.
- Positive review by owners on kind and responsive customer service
- Most owners post they are surprised by how sturdy and durable the mailbox is
Be Wary Of..
- As with many poly constructed products, the parts are a very tight fit so assembly may require a mallet to get things into place.
- Along with that, quite a few owners state you will need to grind the keyhole a little (like with a file or a Dremel) before trying to install the lock.
- Aesthetics might bother you. With the poly construction, it definitely looks more like a toy than a mailbox.
Overall we were quite surprised at the positive responses by owners, especially for something that from first glance looks more like a child’s toy than a serious locking mailbox. Our preconceptions that mailboxes had to be built with metal alloys to withstand the elements are definitely challenged by the Step2 531700 MailMaster StoreMore. Many owner reviews cannot go wrong and when you think about it, children’s poly construction toys are very durable and sturdy. Add a lock and a large drop and you prevent the casual thief and the casual mail fisherman. If you can live with the aesthetics and are open minded to poly construction vs. metal, this is one you should look into, especially since the price is much lower than your traditional locking mailboxes.
What Buyers Are Saying
“I bought this mailbox to stop drive-by mail theft. I live in a rural area and had begun to experience times when I found my mailbox door open and empty. I leave the floor out so all mail drops into the locked section below. I found installation to be easy, requiring only cutting the existing post to 24″ and lowering this one onto it then securing it in place with the included lag bolts. The only drawback for me is that my old box was larger and would accommodate larger packages. An acceptable trade-off…(READ MORE)”
“This is fine. Assembly is straight forward. Those who complain about the locking mechanism must not have a rubber mallet. Of course it fits tightly. You want it to fit tightly. Otherwise it isn’t waterproof OR secure. I have no complaints. Neither does my mail carrier… (READ MORE)”
“Finally got around to installing this mailbox to replace the old standard. Easy to assemble and it fit right onto the existing post. This is the best for storing ‘vacation mail’. Having a door on both sides ends the dropped mail into the gutter. Do a little faux painting on the ‘stones’ to help with the plastic look…(READ MORE)”
